Music Mondays | Oscar Isaac & Alisha Merrick sing an original by Grady McShane, Sweet Lady Death

Some of you may remember that our original blog posts started with Music Mondays, where we would share some of our favorite music finds. We are revamping Music Mondays to now be live/acoustic videos of original and cover songs.

Before we were Laughing Moms, we started out writing original music together as Alisha found Eden. As much as we love to laugh, we also love music. It’s a passion we want to continue to develop and share. And though we’re both busy moms and live 4 hours apart and have commitments to create content as Laughing Moms, we also want to commit to this goal of creating music.

To kick off our Music Mondays, we have a special treat for you. Our first video is a song written by an incredibly talented friend, Grady McShane. The song is called Sweet Lady Death. It was arranged by another incredibly talented friend, Oscar Isaac, and performed by Oscar Isaac and Alisha Merrick.

When Alisha was 13 years old, she was booted out of her hometown of Miami, Florida by Hurricane Andrew.  As fate would have it, that same storm also booted Oscar out of Miami.  Shortly thereafter, Grady, Oscar, and Alisha all became fast friends at high school together.  Fast forward many years and miles apart, and they are still dear friends who manage to get together and make music every once in a while. We hope you enjoy Sweet Lady Death.

What songs would you like to hear on Music Mondays as cover songs? We’d love to hear from you!

Music Mondays! May the Fourth Be With You!!

Music Mondays May the Fourth

In honor of Star Wars Day, we are sharing songs with some relation to stars or space or Star Wars today!

Angels On The Moon by Thriving Ivory

This is an older song, but not super well known.  It should be, however, as the lyrics are really beautiful.

Never Had by Oscar Isaac

I have to include one of my all time favorite songs, and before you think it doesn’t have anything to do with May the 4th, my dear friend Oscar Isaac who wrote and performs this song, is in the new Star Wars movie!!!  He’s the pilot in all the new trailers.  I’m so excited for him to be a part of such an amazing film and I’m so excited to share this gorgeous song with you all.  It’s not an official video, but it still lets you hear the song.

A Sky Full of Stars by Coldplay

We adore Coldplay and also thought about sharing a throwback to their song Yellow but figured most people on the planet have already heard and love that song 🙂 Same goes for Champagne Supernova by Oasis. Then we remembered lots of other awesome songs that you’ve probably already heard, but they’re fun to share for Star Wars Day! So, here’s a little list of those as well, in no particular order:

Intergalactic by Beastie Boys

Counting Stars by One Republic

Shooting the Moon by Ok Go

Fade Into You by Mazzy Star

What are some of your favorite celestial themed songs or songs by artists with starry names??  Share in the comments below and May the Fourth Be With You!!

xx Alisha

Music Mondays!!

Hey y’all!! Did you know that friday was National Sibling Day?? Was your Facebook home page saturated with posts and embarrassing pictures circa 1985 of your friends and their siblings professing that they have the BEST brothers and sisters ever?? Yeah, mine too. But, I hate to break it to you. I really do have the best brothers and sisters.

Here’s a little known fact about me: I’m the oldest of 10. I come from blended families, which has turned out to be one my greatest blessings. My brothers are hardworking, intelligent, amazingly funny guys. And my sisters are insanely creative, cultured and rockstar moms.

I also have to make a shout out to all of my in-laws!! My siblings have married GREAT people who only add to the pot and make our family better. My husband has wonderful siblings and spouses that I’m just crazy about. Having so many siblings creates the coolest diversity and gives you access to crazy talented folks. Adventures and shenanigans GALORE!!!

Shared bedrooms and bathrooms fashion bonds that are of the strongest and truest variety. Having that built in network of support is invaluable. If you think about it, the sibling relationship is the only relationship that you will have for your entire life! My brothers and sisters and I all have a deep love of music. Singing together is one of my favorite things to do. The music industry is filled with family acts. Laughing Moms Music Mondays Sibling Bands

 Here’s a few:

The Jackson 5
The Osmonds
The Bangles
The Bee Jee’s
The Beach Boys
The Jetts
The Ramones
The Avett Brothers
Oasis
Radiohead
Arcade Fire
Kings of Leon
Here are a few more that are some of my personal favorites…..

First is The Broods. They’re a brother and sister hailing from New Zealand. Who doesn’t love anything from New Zealand? My sister-in-law, who has great taste in music, introduced me to them. She also takes really good care of my brother and makes him completely happy, so she’s totally IN!!!

Next we have the sister act, HAIM. They are the coolest thing to come up out of the Indie circuit. They have this throw back sound that I dig. Plus, they’re BFF’s with Taylor Swift, which you know how much we love her round these parts. (Check out our parody to Taylor’s song “Style” here!)

Last, I give you the iconic sibling duo The Carpenters. This song is so perfect for today for so many reasons. First, it’s Monday. Second, it’s raining here in Houston. And third, my moms LOVES The Carpenters. So, in honor of the gal who gave me my siblings, this one’s for you momma!!

Did any of these blow your mind?? I hope so. Now go call your brothers and sisters and tell them how much you love them.
xx

Music Monday!

We’re finally getting Music Monday up on a Monday! WooHoo!

Music Monday April Showers

April showers bring May flowers! So, let’s celebrate the rain today!

I Love The Rain The Most by Joe Purdy

If you’ve not yet discovered Joe Purdy, do yourself a favor and search him on YouTube.  This song is on my bedtime playlist.  Super mellow, just like a rainy day.

Purple Rain cover by Adam Levine

I loved this song by Prince in the 80s.  I wanted to ride a motorcycle in the purple rain.  Or do anything in purple rain.  It sounded awesome.  There aren’t many covers of Prince songs, because Prince has such a unique and difficult vocal style.  This cover does a great job, I think.  So thank you, Adam Levine, for making it Purple Rain!

Why Does It Always Rain On Me? by Travis

I fell in love with Travis when I lived in London many years ago.  Don’t worry, my husband’s okay with it.  Even though this song is pretty old now, it still sounds current.  Check it out!

Send us your favorite song discoveries.  Maybe they’ll make it onto one of our Music Mondays!

Music Mondays!!

We’re starting a new weekly segment! Music Mondays!  You know we love music, and we’d love to share with you some of the music that moves us!  Since we’re getting started late this week (it’s Tuesday if you hadn’t heard) we’re going to post songs in honor of St. Patrick’s Day!

1.  From The Edge of the Deep Green Sea (cover by Oscar Isaac)

This amazing song by The Cure is one of my all-time favorites.  The lyrics are so beautifully tragic.  And it talks about the deep green sea, very fitting for St. Patrick’s Day! This is a ridiculously gorgeous cover by my dear friend, Oscar Isaac. Enjoy!

2. Green Eyes (Coldplay)

Coldplay first made me happy with a song about one of green’s parents, Yellow.  It wasn’t until a couple years later that I heard Green Eyes.  Love this song.  My mom and sister have green eyes and my blue eyes sometimes look green, so you know, can’t help but love the lyrics.  And Coldplay has my undying love.  I wish they were my friends.

3.  Green, Green Rocky Road (cover by Oscar Isaac for Inside Llewyn Davis Soundtrack)

If you haven’t heard the Inside Llewyn Davis Soundtrack yet, you must!  My favorites from the soundtrack are Fare Thee Well (both versions, Oscar and Marcus Mumford and Oscar solo), The Death of Queen Jane, and The Shoals of Herring.  Green, Green Rocky Road is also a great cover, and of course, perfect for St. Patrick’s Day!

4.  Greensleeves

Beautiful song we’re all familiar with, but did you know it was called Greensleeves?? It’s an old English folk tune that has had a variety of lyrics written to accompany it.

5. Give Me Some Hash

And lastly, did you see our St. Patty’s Day Parody of “Take Me To Church” by Hozier?  An ode to all things Irish, or at least all things that Americans think are Irish 🙂

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  Look for our Music Monday posts!!
