Tuesday Treasures! Mercury Glass Tutorial! (sans mercury)

IMG_0003

I think mercury is fascinating (it’s also an awesome song by The Counting Crows.)

Arguably the most beautiful heavy metal in existence, it kind of loses its appeal when you find out it happens to be deadly, so that’s kind of a downer.  But it’s just so crazy to see a metal be a liquid at room temperature.  This is also probably one reason mercury was used anciently, because it didn’t require heating to make it liquid and easily incorporated into the manufacture of other goods. That’s just my guess.  I could be way off.

Mercury was originally used to make the reflective surface of mirrors, which would probably be considered the first mercury glass.  But what we know and reference as mercury glass didn’t actually use mercury.  Instead, it was made by blowing double-walled glass and filling the center with a solution of silver nitrate and grape sugar and then sealing the object to contain the silver solution.

This tutorial is meant to mimic the effects of this silver nitrate solution on glass, but eliminates the hard parts, like, you know,  blowing double-walled glass, and obtaining silver nitrate, etc.  Continue reading

Tuesday Treasures! Diamonds and Burlap and Paint, Oh My!

IMG_6737

In true fashion, I never have all the before photos I should have.  But I got this awesome table from Craigslist.  I had been looking for a small round table that could expand with leaves.  I found one that was pedestal style, but my husband worried that our crazy little family would knock over something that essentially only had one leg.  So, this table won out with a 4-leg advantage and it’s super sturdy.

#GoodMomMoment

Yesterday the morning started at a relatively balmy 67º and my kids convinced me they didn’t need a jacket. Then half way through the day a cold front moved in, leaving my kids stranded at school without coats to wait outside in the car rider line (cuz I sure didn’t think to run them up their jackets when I realized how chilly it had become…)

Today I redeemed myself and my children left for school this morning wearing not one but TWO jackets! YES!!! ‪#‎celebratingthesmallvictories‬ ‪#‎goodmommoment‬ ~ Eden

Wonderful Things Wednesday! The Lovely, Yummy, Almighty COCONUT! (AKA nut-bearing monkey-face) Everything and more than you’ve ever wanted to know about Coconuts!

The Lovely, Yummy, Almighty COCONUT! (AKA nut-bearing monkey-face)

I love coconuts.  Maybe I went to college in Hawaii because of my love for coconuts, or maybe my love for coconuts started in Hawaii.  I’m not really sure, but I do know that I love coconuts.  I also married a Polynesian so it would be acceptable to regularly incorporate coconuts into my daily fanfare.  Well, that’s not the only reason.  He also looked really hot in his baby-blue security guard shirt that he wore for his on-campus job.  And every time I heard him laugh, I couldn’t contain my happiness, and he laughs all the time.  I knew I would be forever happy and after almost 13 years of marriage, I’m happier than ever.  But back to the coconut.  Not the one I married, the other, smaller brown ball of happiness that makes ordinary meals become delightsome.  Have I told you I love coconuts?  I know, I know, I’ve already told you.  So, now let me tell you some of the reasons why I love coconuts.

Tuesday Treasures! Coffee Table Makeover with Aluminum Foil, Homemade Chalk Paint, and Metallic Glaze!

IMG_6684IMG_6685

About 99% of the furniture in my house has come from Craigslist or garage sales.  I can rarely justify buying something new when I can buy something used and for much less money and make it exactly how I want it.  I’m not always sure what I’m going to do with a piece when I buy it, however.  I usually let it sit for a little while until I finally decide what color/style I want something to be.

This particular piece I bought from Craigslist from a furniture staging company.  It’s built on a wood frame so it’s very sturdy, but it seems to be made of some sort of molded plastic for all the decorative carvings, and the top of the coffee table was like some sort of fake leather with nicks in it.  I knew I planned to paint it with home made chalk paint since it would adhere nicely to the weird plastic-like molding.  But I didn’t know what I wanted to do with the top, since it had the nicks in the fake leather.  It still wouldn’t look nice painted.

Mmmmm Mmmmm Monday! Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Meatloaf!

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, DEEEElicious Meatloaf!

541493

For many people, the word “meatloaf” brings up horrible visions of scary lumps of meat, or scary looking men from the 80s.  Either way, it does not make taste buds scream with joy and instead usually sends taste buds running, screaming in horror.  But NO More!!  This Meatloaf is Amazeballs.  Sooooo gooooood.  My sweet little girls and I all have to eat gluten-free and dairy-free and I also try to limit our sugar intake.  This recipe meets those requirements and is so delicious, your family will hold up their swaying cell phone flashlights as they chant “Encore!”

Ingredients:

  • 3 eggs
  • 1 C coconut milk (full fat from the can, This is usually my go-to brand)
  • 1 T dried onions
  • 3/4 t salt
  • sprinkle layer of Mrs. Dash Tomato Basil Garlic on top of the aforementioned ingredients and whisk all together (I can never find this at Walmart, but Target usually has it.)
  • 3/4 C glutino table cracker crumbs (about 6.5-7 crackers smashed. I usually achieve this by putting the crackers in a thick ziploc bag, throwing said bag on the ground and having dance party USA on top of the bag)
  • 2 lbs ground beef (We actually have a store that carries grass-fed bison that I prefer to use, but use whatever you like that resembles ground beef.)
Directions:
(Brace yourself, this gets a little complicated…. Haha, Just Kidding! It’s one of the EASIEST meals ever to make.  The hardest part is smooshing it into a nice flat shape, but that might be because my long fingers are a bit wonky.)
Squish all together and put into glass baking dish that’s been sprayed with oil. Cover with foil.
Bake for 350º for 1 hr
Sauce:
1/3 C ketchup (My girls love Xyla brand ketchup and I love that it’s sugar-free!)
1/3 t nutmeg
1 T xylitol (I also use Xyla brand xylitol for this.  It’s made from North American Birch trees, instead of corn or mushrooms like many other brands.)
1 T pure maple syrup
small amt of yellow mustard (to taste)
Combine sauce ingredients, pour over top of meatloaf, and cook an additional 15 min uncovered. If your family is sauce-obsessed like mine, you may want to double this sauce recipe.  Then eat it and love your life.  Serve with steamed veggies, or your favorite mashed root veggie.  Enjoy!!
I do not receive any compensation from any of the brands recommended here.  Those are just the items I normally use.  However, if they ever decide they want to compensate me for sharing, then I’ll say, “Um, heck yes, and thank you.”
